Honors Geometry
Syllabus
Background
This is my 3rd year teaching at Ridgeview STEM Jr. High School teaching Math 8 and Honors Geometry. I have taught mathematics for 15 years at Pickerington High School Central. My previous courses included Fundamental Math, Fundamental Geometry, Algebra, Honors Algebra, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, AP Statistics, and AP Calculus. Before coming to Pickerington, I taught in the Chicago suburbs for two years.
I am married with two children who attend Pickerington schools. My wife and I are both alumni of Miami University.
My current interests are soccer (I’m a huge Manchester United fan), hockey, running, playing Pokemon, chess, musicals, camping, traveling, and trying to learn other languages.
Philosophy on Math
I love math, but I am also realistic to understand that it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. My hope is that I can give some success and confidence to those that have struggled with the subject in the past. I do understand what you are going through as I took Algebra 1 twice (8th grade and 9th). For those that have the same passion to solve problems, I look forward to growing the love of the material with challenging problems. In the end, I hope that students have the tools to be successful at the high school level and beyond.
Grading (What most everyone wants to know):
Students will receive three types of grades in math class:
1. Embedded Assessments (Summative Assessment): These assessments are in the Springboard student book and will be given as a take-home quiz. The point total is 5 pts.
2. Quizzes (Formative/Summative Assessment): Quizzes will be given with or without prior notification. These can be full period quizzes, or shorter before/end of class quizzes to see what students understand or have previously been taught. Re-takes may or may not be allowed on this type of assessment.
3. Unit Test (Formative/Summative Assessment): We will try to have two tests per trimester. I grade the tests on a curve based upon the performance of all students in my Honors Geometry classes. Re-takes may be available for those who score under 70%. Re-take tests will be graded without a curve and have a max grade of 70%
4. Homework and Class Activities (Formative Assessment): Practice problems are assigned from the Springboard book or worksheet. Extra assignments can be done to help boost this part of the final grade.
Grading Scale
o We will follow the grading scale as set forth by the PLSD.
Classroom Rules
o We will follow all school rules as set forth by the PLSD.
Two additional rules
· Do not do anything that will cause a problem for someone else
· Do your best at all times
